Motorola has a rather strange strategy with its Moto G8 series. Rather than releasing the whole family at once, the Moto G8 Plus came out first last year, followed by the Moto G8 Power last month. Now the regular Moto G8 is here to round off the list – unless the Moto G8 Play is waiting in the wings for a UK release (it emerged in Brazil last year).
So how is the Moto G8 different from the other phones in the family? Let’s find out.
Motorola Moto G8: Everything you need to know
Motorola Moto G8 specs: What makes it tick?
Like the Moto G8 Plus and Power, the regular Moto G8 is powered by the midrange Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor backed by 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage, expandable via microSD. To confuse matters a little, it’s actually 0.1in larger than the G8 Plus at 6.4in, albeit with a 4,000mAh battery instead of the 5,000mAh cell found in its siblings.
Unlike said siblings, it only has a 720p screen, though it does boost an 87% body-to-screen ratio, with a tiny pinhole front-facing camera embedded in the top left of the display.
Speaking of cameras, this is the other point where the Moto G8 is at a disadvantage to the rest of the Moto G8 family. It essentially has three of the four rear cameras found on the Moto G8 Power: the 16MP f/1.7 main camera with additional 8MP f/2.2 and 2MP f/2.2 for ultrawide and macro shots respectively. That means it loses out on the most useful one: the 8MP f/2.2 telephoto lens.
The front-facing selfie camera also gets a downgrade, going from a 16MP f/2.0 sensor on the G8 Power to an 8MP f/2.0 lens here.
The Moto G8 will come with Android 10 out of the box, and if past form is anything to go by it’ll be a very clean version of the OS with minimal bloat.
Motorola Moto G8 price: How much will the phone cost?
The Moto G8 will sell for £179. That makes it £40 cheaper than both the G8 Plus and G8 Power, which is to be expected given the smaller battery, lower resolution screen and weaker camera specs. It’s a slight change in branding though, given the G7 series had the Power model undercutting the regular G7...
Motorola Moto G8 release date: When can you buy one?
Right now if you live in Brazil. As you probably don’t, you’ll have to wait a while.
Motorola hasn’t been able to confirm an official release date for the Moto G8 just yet, but says it will be coming “over the coming weeks in Europe, Latin America, Asia and Australia,” so you shouldn’t have too long to wait.
Look out for a full review as soon as we’ve had a chance to put it through its paces.
