Just over a year ago, when I was finally putting my ageing MacBook Pro out to pasture, I considered the Microsoft Surface Book 2. But ultimately, good as it was, I couldn’t justify the high price of entry when a Surface Laptop 2 would fill 90% of my needs and cost roughly half the price. If this deal was around at the time, I might have had a rethink. Currys has knocked £300 off the entry-level Surface Book 2, bringing the price to a much more reasonable £1,199 . Although this is the least equipped model, it’s still a dogged little performer, coming with an Intel Kaby Lake i5 processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB of SSD storage and a 3,000 x 2,000 display. That’s a lot of money, but this is a very special laptop we’re talking about. Its party trick is that the screen can be removed from the dock, for when you just want a tablet. Or you can clip it into the screen in reverse and use it as a clipboard. All of this is made more practical, of course, because it’s compatible with the Surface Pen (sold separately, natch.) As Nathan wrote in his review, it’s a laptop with “a unique set of capabilities”, and while he was looking at a version twice the price of this (yes, £2,999), many of the key points remain the same – including the quality of the screen, which is “good enough for professional-level photo editing, illustration and video editing.” To be clear, £1,199 is still a lot – especially for a laptop that’s now two years old. You might be better served with a Surface Laptop 3 or something else with a newer generation of Intel processors. But if you want a convertible with plenty going for it, the Surface Book 2 is still worth a look. Buy now from Currys
